Firearm-Related Injuries and Deaths: A Collective Challenge
Firearm-related injuries and deaths represent a public health crisis confronting communities across the nation daily:
- Rising Incidents: Since 2018, there have been over 100 school shooting incidents each year in our country, with these numbers steadily increasing.
- Source of Firearms: Approximately 75% of perpetrators in school-based active shooter situations obtained their firearms from a parent or close relative’s home. This underscores the critical connection between the roles of families, caregivers, guardians, and the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in ensuring student safety on school grounds.
- Beyond School Shootings: The issue extends beyond school-based active shooter incidents, encompassing various types of firearm injuries, including interpersonal violence, suicide, and unintentional fatal and nonfatal firearm injuries.

Everyone, whether a firearm owner or not, has a role in raising awareness about safe, responsible firearm storage. Here are some simple yet highly effective practices that can help reduce firearm-related incidents in our community and protect our children:
- Safely Store Firearms: Always store firearms unloaded in a tamper-proof locked cabinet, box, safe, firearm vault, or storage case that is inaccessible to children or unauthorized adults.
- Safely Store Ammunition: Store ammunition separately in a tamper-proof locked cabinet, safe, firearm vault, or storage case that is inaccessible to children or unauthorized adults.
- Secure Firearms: Use trigger locks or cable locks to prevent firearms from being fired.
- Trigger Locks: These use a mechanism to clamp down around the trigger or trigger housing to prevent it from being pressed (Note: trigger locks should not be installed on loaded firearms).
- Cable Locks: A cable is threaded through the barrel or action of a firearm to prevent it from firing.
