Greetings UCISD students and families, and welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year!  My name is Niki Henderson and I am proud to serve as the Lead Family-Student Support Counselor for Uvalde CISD.  I also currently serve as the district Homeless and Foster Care Liaison.  Although school this year looks different than any of us could have anticipated, I remain grateful for the opportunity to continue working with the wonderful students, families, and staff of UCISD.  I know it is going to be a great year!

The primary role of the Family-Student Support Counselor (FSSC) is to provide support and education to students experiencing social-emotional and mental health challenges.  According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 6 U.S. youth between the ages of 6 and 17 experience a mental health disorder each year.  Common challenges facing students include depression, anxiety, grief, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse disorders, and others.  All of the FSSC's are educated, trained, and licensed to assist students in managing the emotions and behaviors that sometimes accompany these disorders.  When necessary, the FSSC's can also connect students and families with additional rescources in the community.

On a personal note, I came to Uvalde in 1994 after graduating from St. Mary's University, where I had the opportunity to play college volleyball and earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  A short time after moving to Uvalde I met my wonderful husband, Roy, a loud and proud graduate of Uvalde High School!  We have two children, a daughter and a son, both of whom also graduated from Uvalde High School.  In 2000 I returned to graduate school and, in 2004, earned a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State University, completing all requirements to become a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2007.  Since that time I have served the people of Uvalde County, having worked for K'Star Youth and Family Services, as well as Hill Country MHDD, before joining the Uvalde CISD family in 2015.

Should your student need additional support, please review and complete the consent form below to request services at school.  I currently serve Robb and Anthon campuses.  If your students attends a different campus, please look for the FSSC on their campus' website.  A list of community providers is also included below for your convenience.  I look forward to another great school year and encourage you to contact me with any questions or needs you might have.
