UHS NJROTC Students Attended Navy Basic Leadership Training:
In June UCISD was represented by 10 UHS NJROTC students attending the Navy Basic Leadership Training at TAMU Kingsville Texas. The BLT is quota controlled and is only offered to less than 10% of the total cadets assigned to the 56 Navy JROTC Units in high schools across the state of Texas. The Basic Leadership Training 5 day camp has a 77-hour curriculum and is high paced, intense training in physical fitness, military drill, team building, land navigation, leadership application, water survival, first aid, administration of the NJROTC Program, citizenship development, and briefs about education beyond high school. Seasoned instructors lead the camp from the individual schools represented and most have experience as Drill Instructors in the Navy and Marine Corps. Our Cadets were able to visit with TAMU Staff about the benefits of attending TAMU. A student’s typical day begins at 5:30 am with physical fitness, breakfast, military drill, lunch, classroom academics, more drill, more physical fitness, dinner, more drill and more physical fitness and preparation for inspections prior to lights out at 10:00 pm. The end result is an increase in the understanding and importance of teamwork, academics, discipline, leadership and the Navy’s Core Values of Honor, Board Recognition 2 | Page Courage, Commitment. The opportunity for our cadets to participate and excel at one of these camps puts them in a category of an “elite” group of NJROTC students. We are very proud of our students!
